Shane and Buddy

November Story

I've been meeting with my buddy for almost two years now! The program has not only given me a new friend but also the chance to understand the life of someone who struggles differently than I do. Our relationship has grown so much over time, and I have learned to be flexible, patient, and appreciate the little wins. We are often found galivanting around the neighborhood, singing songs, searching for Pokémon, or piecing together new Lego sets while creating an imaginary world with the characters. I look forward to every weekend, a chance for exploration, and a time when being with my buddy is all that matters. I am so proud of all the progress my buddy and I have made, and I swell with pride when I talk about being part of Athletes for Kids.

Mentee Parent

It’s truly heartwarming to see our son connect with Shane, his senior mentor. Shane has taken the time to understand our son’s interests and thoughtfully plans activities for them to enjoy together. Every week brings a new adventure that our son is eager to embark on. He loves dogs, Legos, and Pokémon Go, and Shane finds creative ways to incorporate these passions into their time together. They chat about school, greet each other in the hallways, and even spend afternoons building Legos. Shane’s creativity and kindness shine through in everything he does, helping our son feel comfortable and confident enough to try new things. He is so lucky to have Shane as a mentor and always looks forward to their adventures!
