1. About Athletes for Kids
Athletes for Kids is a nonprofit organization that connects children with disabilities, special needs, or unique circumstances with high school student-athletes for supportive, one-on-one mentoring relationships.
Information about eligibility, applications, matching, program participation, fees, and other program requirements is provided on the applicable pages of our website and may be updated from time to time.
Participation in the AFK mentoring program is subject to AFK's application, screening, matching, safety, and program requirements.
2. Use of Our Website
You may use this website for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms & Conditions.
You agree not to:
- Use the website for any unlawful or unauthorized purpose.
- Submit false, misleading, or fraudulent information.
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the website, its systems, forms, or other accounts.
- Interfere with the operation or security of the website.
- Upload or transmit malicious software, viruses, or other harmful material.

3. Applications and Program Information
AFK provides online forms for individuals and families who are interested in participating in our programs.
By submitting an application or other information to AFK, you agree that the information you provide will be used to evaluate eligibility, administer the program, communicate with participants, facilitate mentoring relationships, and carry out other purposes described in our Privacy Policy.
Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance into the AFK program or placement with a mentor or mentee.
AFK requests additional information, documentation, interviews, references, and other necessary steps as part of its application and matching processes.
4. Mentor and Mentee Participation
AFK mentoring relationships involve minors and high school students. Participation is subject to AFK's program policies, safety procedures, screening requirements, training requirements, and participation guidelines.
Mentors and their parents or guardians, as applicable, are expected to follow AFK's program rules and safety guidelines.
Parents or guardians of participating children are responsible for providing accurate information relevant to their child's participation and for communicating with AFK regarding any circumstances, needs, accommodations, or concerns that may affect the mentoring relationship.
AFK may modify, pause, or end a mentoring relationship when necessary for safety, program administration, compatibility, or other legitimate program reasons.
5. Communications
By providing your contact information to AFK, you may receive communications related to your application, participation in the program, events, meetings, mentoring, fundraising, or other AFK activities.
Email is one of AFK's primary methods of communication. Depending on the information you provide and the communications you elect to receive, AFK may also communicate with you by telephone or text message.
You may manage certain communications through the methods provided in the communication or by contacting AFK directly.
6. SMS/Text Messaging Program
AFK offers SMS/text messaging to mentors and other program participants who provide a mobile phone number and consent to receive text messages where consent is required.
Types of Messages
AFK's SMS program is used primarily for program-related reminders and administrative communications. For mentors, text messages may include:
- Monthly mentoring and volunteering hour reminders: Mentors may receive a maximum of two reminders each month, sent on the 5th and 10th of the month, if their monthly hours have not yet been submitted.
- Monthly high school chapter meeting reminders: Mentors may receive one reminder for their monthly high school chapter meeting.
- Occasional mentor-buddy event reminders: AFK may occasionally send text reminders about mentor-buddy events. Most AFK event reminders are sent by email rather than text message.
Message frequency may vary if additional program-related communications are necessary, but AFK intends to keep SMS communications limited to relevant program reminders and updates.
Opting Out
You may stop receiving AFK SMS messages at any time by replying STOP to an AFK text message.
After you send STOP, you should no longer receive AFK SMS messages, except for messages that may be necessary to confirm or process your opt-out request.

AFK does not sell or share mobile phone numbers or SMS consent information with third parties or affiliates for their own marketing or promotional purposes. AFK may use service providers to deliver text messages and other communications on our behalf as necessary to operate the program.

7. Events and Activities
AFK offers events, activities, meetings, and other opportunities for mentors, mentees, families, and supporters.
Participation in an AFK event may be subject to separate registration requirements, capacity limits, eligibility requirements, waivers, or other event-specific terms.
Participants are responsible for following event rules and instructions provided by AFK, event venues, and other authorized personnel.
8. Fees and Payments
AFK is a nonprofit organization that provides one-on-one mentoring services to children. AFK spends approximately $1,200 per mentorship each year to support the mentoring relationship, including program administration, mentor training, activities, and ongoing support.
For families who are able to contribute, AFK asks for a nominal mentorship fee of $240 per year, beginning once a child has been matched with a mentor. This fee helps offset a portion of the cost of providing the mentoring program.
The mentorship fee is not a donation to Athletes for Kids. It is a payment made in exchange for mentoring services provided by AFK. Families who are unable to pay the mentorship fee may request a scholarship through the application process. The fee may be waived for families who qualify for a scholarship.
AFK also accepts voluntary donations from individuals, families, businesses, and other supporters. Donations are separate from mentorship fees and help AFK fund its programs, including the costs of supporting mentorships, training mentors, activities, and other organizational expenses.
Because mentorship fees are payments for services rather than charitable donations, mentorship fees do not qualify for employer matching programs. Families should consult their employer for information about which types of payments or donations may qualify for employer matching. AFK does not guarantee that any particular donation will qualify for an employer matching program.
Payments and donations may be processed through third-party payment providers. Additional terms or payment information may be presented at the time of payment.
9. Donations and Fundraising
AFK is a nonprofit organization and may solicit donations through its website, email communications, events, and other fundraising activities.
Information provided in connection with a donation or fundraising activity will be handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy and any applicable terms presented during the transaction.
AFK may use third-party platforms to process donations and payments. Those providers may have their own terms and privacy policies.
10. Intellectual Property
Unless otherwise stated, the content on this website, including text, logos, graphics, photographs, videos, designs, and other materials, is owned by or used by permission of Athletes for Kids and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws.
