Sebastian and Buddy

Mount Si mentor Sebastian

I joined Athletes for Kids in the spring of my junior year, and it has turned out to be one of the most meaningful things I have done in my life. I went into my mentorship hoping to give back to my community and create a special relationship with my buddy. I have gotten so much more than I ever hoped for.

Over the course of the past year, we have found out we have so much in common. We both love different sports, and we are always finding new ways to either put a twist on a sport we have already played or find a new one to try out. One of the biggest things my buddy has given me is a chance to slow down and take a break from all the stress and distractions from the other parts of my life, and be present in the moment with whatever we are doing.

I am so grateful to be a part of my buddy’s life and to see how he has grown and conquered different challenges that he has faced. Seeing how far he has come in just a year in so many aspects of his life is truly amazing to witness and to be a part of.

Although we have made a lot of memories together, one of my favorites was when I was invited to watch his school play. As I entered the classroom, he ran over to me, gave me a big hug, and told me how happy he was that I could attend the play. Seeing the impact that I am able to have on my buddy and the lessons that I have learned as a mentor has been truly a rewarding experience.

Mentee Parent

As a parent, I can't express enough how grateful I am for the impact my child's mentor has had on his life. The bond they have built is truly remarkable—each week, my son eagerly anticipates their time together, knowing he has someone who believes in him, challenges him, and encourages him to reach his full potential. His mentor provides a steady, positive influence, offering both structure and support that have helped boost his confidence in ways I never imagined.

I’ve watched my son become more motivated, more self-assured, and more determined to succeed because he sees the path his mentor has taken and wants to follow in those footsteps. This relationship has become more than just guidance—it’s a friendship, a source of inspiration, and a reminder that with the right support, he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to.
