Nolan and Buddy

July Story

Joining Athletes for Kids has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and being a mentor since my sophomore year has truly shaped who I am today. My buddy and I have been matched for about a year and a half, and during that time we’ve built a really strong bond, we’re always laughing, challenging each other, and just enjoying whatever we’re doing together. Whether we’re playing football, lacrosse, soccer, kickball, or skiing up on the mountain, we’re always finding ways to make the most of every moment. On rainy days, we get just as excited to dive into board games or even create our own.

What’s made this journey so special is that when we’re together, all the stress from school or life just disappears, and it’s just us having a blast. One of my favorite memories was watching my buddy in his school play, it was incredible to see him step out of his shell and shine in a totally different way. He’s also been one of my biggest supporters, and I’ll never forget running off the field after a big lacrosse win and seeing the huge smile on his face.

This mentorship has taught me the power of being present and how much of a difference just an hour with someone who brings you joy can make. I’m so grateful for our friendship and excited for all the memories still to come.

Mentee Parent

My husband, Jordan, and I couldn’t be more grateful for AFK and the absolute gift that Nolan’s consistent mentorship has brought into our son’s life. Nolan is so communicative, hard-working, reliable, kind, and fun. He has taught our family of six about lacrosse, a new-to-us sport, and we have all loved cheering his team on as they won their state championship title this spring. Go EHS LAX!

Our son says that he “loves that Nolan is open to new things.” They often play and create board games together and cheer one another on from the sidelines of their respective sports. They skied on the mountains together and spent a recent spring afternoon competing together against our son’s dad on the golf course, where the boys won. 🙂

When our son tried something new and performed in his school play last year, Nolan was there in the auditorium, greeting him afterwards with a smile, handwritten card, thoughtful treat, and congratulations. To be seen and supported is such an invaluable gift; it’s been encouraging to watch Nolan and our son show up for one another and grow in their friendship.
