Driftwood Wind Chimes and Heart-Shaped Bird Feeders

These are two fun activities to do with your buddy: driftwood wind chimes and a Valentine's Day inspired heart-shaped bird feeder!

Driftwood Wind Chimes

These Driftwood wind chimes are fun and easy to do! You can go on a driftwood or stick scavenger hunt and then enjoy the beautiful outdoors while you create this fun craft with your buddy.

Materials:

Driftwood or sticks

Acrylic paint

Beads (wooden, plastic or glass)

Painters Tape

Jute

Small Gold Eye Hooks

White beading thread

Instructions:

Step 1: You and your buddy can try mixing paint to create fun and different colors to paint on the stick

Step 2: Add hooks. The hooks actually go into the driftwood pretty easily.  Just mark the spots and start twisting them into place.

Step 3: Add beads to the white beading thread. Mix up the colors or you can also do patterns. Once you are finished remember to tie a knot at the end using a smaller bead to help keep it in place.

Step 4: Add a hanger. On the top of the driftwood add two more hooks at each end then use the jute to connect each side and tie it up to secure and hang it up!

Heart-Shaped Bird Feeder

Show your feathery friends some love by making these heart-shaped bird feeders with your buddy.

Materials

-3/4 cup of birdseed

-1 small packet of gelatin (the Knox brand works great)

-Jute string

-Heart shaped cookie cutter or silicone mold (you can really use or do any shape you and your buddy like!)

-1/4 cup of water

Instructions

*Note: Please remember to consult with your buddy’s parent about any allergies or refer to your buddy's emergency card.

Step 1: Dissolve a packet of gelatin in 1/4 cup of water, bring to simmer and stir until dissolved and let cool slightly.  (Tip: You can ask the buddy parent for help with this step, they can have this ready before your meeting and you and your buddy can do the next steps outdoors)

Step 2: Add ¾ cup of bird seed and mix very well until seeds are coated (it’s important that there’s no excess of liquid)

Step 3: Spoon the seeds into a mold, filling it half way up, and pressing down to make sure it is well packed. Lay tied jute or twine on top of the pressed seed and fill up the rest of the way so the jute is fully covered and you can hang the bird feeder. Then you can put it in the freezer and after a couple of hours you will be able to easily unmold the ornament. Let it dry for a couple of days and then you can hang it outside in a tree where the birds can rest and eat.
